day without a gay

Perhaps a take off the Sergio Arau 2004 feature film Day Without a Mexican, the new Dec. 10 “holiday”being planned challenges the LGBT community to take the day off to show just how much the gays really do for our economy. “Day Without a Gay” promises to be more than just a sick out for florists, gym teachers, and all those other gay employment stereotypes.

“Gay people and our allies are compassionate, sensitive, caring, mobilized, and programmed for success. A day without gays would be tragic because it would be a day without love,” the website says.

“On December 10, you are encouraged not to call in sick to work. You are encouraged to call in ‘gay’–and donate your time to service!”

The volunteer section is still a bit thin, but the site is totally Facebooked out, so it will be interesting if the group gets to Join the Impact levels of involvement and enthusiasm. Hey, even a fraction of that would make for big news.

the power of not buying

courtesy_kyle_spencer498x4282
There’s been plenty of talk of boycotting businesses that supported Proposition 8, but this group wants the LGBT community to stop buying for the holidays all together in the hope of proving the power of the queer dollar.

Pink Holidays is encouraging people to:

* Abstain from accepting store-bought gifts.

* Refrain from gift exchanges that involve store purchased gifts.

the site does concede “Children need their holidays but you can scale back on your purchase power.” Maybe that’s why these two on Santa’s lap are crying.

Talk about a bah humbug…

not exactly schoolhouse rock’s I’m just a bill…

This animation showed up on YouTube a few weeks ago. I wasn’t sure where it was going until the very end. Watch it here:

The whole struggle that Jan and Tom face seems pretty understandable, especially since they like their gay neighbors, Michael and Dan (Michael is the one with the poofy hair and groovy glasses). The strategy of this is pretty brilliant…

Dr. Phil dives into Prop 8

images2

Today’s taping of CBS Paramount’s syndicated talk show “Dr. Phil” dealt with Proposition  8.  Audience members said L.A. attorney Gloria Allred and San Francisco Mayor Gavin  Newsom  were there for the No side, while conservative columnist Maggie Gallagher and  at least one minister represented the Yes vote. The audience was evenly divided between  Yes and No supporters. I’m supposed to be getting a review copy of the episode a day or  two before the air date, which the audience was told is this Friday. I’ll be writing on the  Episode for The Advocate’s web site in the next few days.

How the Mighty Have Fallen…

dobsonThe Colorado-based Focus on the Family, run by Dr. James Dobson, just announced layoffs. Over 200 positions are being either eliminated, with about 150 employees getting pink slips (ironic, no?) and another 50 or so positions being left permanently vacant. FotF spent about $500,000 on the Yes on Prop 8 campaign, but a spokesman said that didn’t impact the organization’s personnel budget.

My first post.

My goal is to write a blog that looks at the struggle for same-sex marriage in the United States. Hopefully you’ll want to read it too.
